The famous superhero film Captain America: The First Avenger has captivated the audience with its many features. It has a dynamic plot and perfectly recreates the atmosphere of wartime. As it turned out, Liverpool was the city that “played the role” of New York. How did the British city manage to transform into an American one? Learn more about the cinematic history of this British city at liverpool-trend.com.
General information about the film
The release of Captain America: The First Avenger became an important event for the world of cinema and especially for Marvel fans. When the film premiered in 2011, it gathered numerous fans of the superhero genre. The plot is based on a comic book about Steve Rogers, an insecure young man who turned into a symbol of the nation, receiving superhuman abilities thanks to an experiment using “vita-rays”. An image of a hero fighting for freedom and justice became the central idea of the comic book and later the film.
The film is set in the 1940s, the time of World War II. Steve Rogers voluntarily participates in secret research and becomes Captain America, a super soldier fighting evil. The main antagonist of the film is Red Skull, who heads the Hydra organization and has ambitious plans for world domination. The confrontation of the two characters takes the viewer into a world of spies, experiments and super technologies, combining fiction with real history.
Marvel Studios made a bet on authenticity concerning costumes, props and locations. Particular attention was paid to the details that helped create a convincing atmosphere of that era. Director Joe Johnston wanted to make everything look as realistic as possible. Therefore, the team chose locations that could truly convey the spirit of 1940s New York.
Even though Liverpool is perfect for the role, such a choice still raises some questions. Probably, the main reason was the city’s old architecture, which made it an ideal place for filming.
Filming in Liverpool

One of the key locations for filming was Stanley Dock, a landmark Liverpool place known for its Victorian warehouses. This historic area has been preserved in its original form, allowing the film crew and the audience to instantly transfer to 1940. The classic buildings around Water Street and the Royal Liver Building, resembling tall American skyscrapers, became helpful too.
Still, the location had to be prepared for filming. It took about a month of painstaking work to make it resemble the New York of that time. The decorators carefully worked on the smallest details: vintage cars that occasionally drove past the characters, advertising posters, architectural elements typical of the American metropolis, etc.

One of the most exciting scenes of the film, Steve Rogers’ chase after the Hydra agent, was filmed in Liverpool. This dynamic episode required perfect organization and the involvement of a huge film crew of 500 people! In addition to the actors, there were technicians and other specialists. Local residents could witness the filming process and see how modern Liverpool was being transformed into 20th-century New York.
Liverpool has long attracted the attention of Hollywood producers. Stanley Dock, for example, had previously become the filming location for Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr in the leading role. However, Captain America surpassed all previous projects in its scale. Thus, Liverpool proved that it is a universal location for creating cinematic masterpieces once again.
Interesting moments for Liverpool residents
Liverpool has pretended to be New York for many films. It has even become a tradition. After all, the city’s architectural landmarks are ideal for creating the image of early 20th-century American metropolises. Modern New York isn’t suitable for filming the 1940s itself at all. Joe Johnston’s choice of Liverpool can be seen as either a compliment to its architectural heritage or a hint at how outdated it has become.

To reach maximum realism, the filmmakers used digital special effects, such as smoke from the subway, typical of real New York. However, the scenes’ basis remained real streets and buildings familiar to Liverpool residents. Interestingly, the director hired local residents as extras. In September 2013, people aged 16 to 90 were invited to casting. In the end, about 500 of them were selected.
Captain America: The First Avenger became a major event for cinema and glorified Liverpool. The city proved that its historical places can come to life on the screen, creating the desired effect. Now, everyone who has watched the film knows that part of this story has been created in a British city with unforgettable architecture.
