The Beatles: The Beginning
John Lennon is considered the leader and “father” of The Beatles. It was he who, in 1957, founded a group called “The Black Jacks,” marking the first step in the formation of the world-famous band. At that time, the musical collective consisted of Lennon’s school friends. None of the young men had any formal musical education or were proficient with their instruments. A few months after the group’s creation, John Lennon met Paul McCartney. Paul already played the guitar and was interested in contemporary music, so he was invited to join the newly formed band. By then, the name had changed again to “The Quarrymen.”
John Lennon and Paul McCartney became friends and began writing songs together. In 1958, Paul suggested to Lennon that they bring George Harrison into the group, who subsequently became the band’s lead guitarist.
The new group played in the skiffle and country and western styles, as well as performing original songs by Lennon and McCartney. In 1960, Stuart Sutcliffe joined on bass, along with drummer Pete Best. It was Stuart Sutcliffe who came up with the new name for the band: “The Beatles.”
That same year, The Beatles travelled to Hamburg, where they began performing in a nightclub. A year later, the band returned to their hometown and started holding concerts at the local Cavern Club.

The Band’s Rise: First Achievements
In 1961, Stuart Sutcliffe left The Beatles. That same year, the group found a manager in Brian Epstein. He began to work on the musicians’ image, dressing the boys in suits and changing their hairstyles and clothing style. One of Brian’s key achievements was securing a contract with Parlophone Records.
In 1962, drummer Pete Best left the group, and his place was taken by Ringo Starr. The band’s career began to skyrocket. The Beatles’ songs started climbing to the top positions in popular music charts.
A year later, the term “Beatlemania” had entered the musical lexicon. This became especially apparent after the band’s first European tour. In 1963, The Beatles moved to London. It’s worth noting that the band members were constantly pursued by fans, requiring them to have police protection at all times. The group’s popularity began to break all records. Also in 1963, the band performed for Queen Elizabeth II. The following year, The Beatles conquered American fans during their tour of the USA.
1965 was no less productive. The musicians toured Europe, North America, Australia, and the Middle East. A second film about the popular group was released. The Beatles also held a concert in New York, attended by 55,000 fans, which was a record at the time. That same year, Paul McCartney wrote the song “Yesterday,” which remains popular to this day.
And the icing on the cake – Queen Elizabeth II awarded the musicians the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
The Breakup of the Legendary Band: Why It Happened
The Beatles rapidly became famous not only in Great Britain but around the world. Unfortunately, the band could not withstand the immense pressure of their success. From 1966, a crisis began to emerge in the relationships between the musicians. Each member started to express their own vision for the band’s development and pursued different musical directions. Despite these disagreements, the group continued to work together. The BBC even broadcast a live performance by The Beatles to the entire world.
Tensions within the group escalated after the death of their manager, Brian Epstein. His position was filled by Allen Klein. Notably, the appointment of the new manager was not agreed upon by Paul McCartney. In addition, Lennon and Harrison began to release solo records while still part of the band.
The rift between the members was clear. In 1970, Paul McCartney announced that he was leaving the band and released a solo album. And just like that, the legendary group The Beatles ceased to exist. Each member went on to build a solo career, but that is a topic for another article.
It should be noted that of the famous foursome, John Lennon was the first to pass away – he was shot and killed outside his home in 1980. George Harrison died of cancer in 2001. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr continue to delight fans with their music to this day.
So, that is the story of the rise and fall of the famous group, The Beatles. This band conquered the entire world with their creativity, songs, and electrifying concerts. Decades later, their music remains as popular as ever. We hope you found this material interesting and learned more about your home city and its famous figures.
